Made Ali is a freelance journalist based in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia's largest palm oil producing province. He spent four years investigating the licenses issued by Riau Governor Rusli Zainal to clear protected forests to 14 palm oil companies. In March 2014, the Pekanbaru court found Governor Zainal guilty of corruption and sentenced him to 14 years in jail. Made was part of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism team that exposed the continued practice of forced labor in the Indonesian palm oil industry.
